Students with grades from other countries

Grades from other countries cannot be compared with those from the Swedish compulsory schools and consequently, students with grades from other countries cannot compare their grades with students from Swedish compulsory schools.  Instead, these applicants will be tested on an “independent quota". The admission within the independent quota is decided on the basis of a total judgment of the complete merits. The part responsible for the education, i.e. the municipality you apply to, or the independent upper secondary school, forms an opinion of the final grades you have received from an international school or another country. It is a matter of independent judgement and not a judgement based on grades.

In order to be admitted to an education within the independent quota of the Swedish national upper secondary education program in the final admission, you need, apart from English and mathematics, also to have passed in Swedish (the exception being International Baccalaureate where it is not necessary to have a final grade in Swedish). Depending on what sort of program you are applying for you also need to have finals grades in some additional subjects.

For programs with a focus on university studies you need to have passed English, mathematics and Swedish. You also need to have final grades in 9 more subjects (for the Natural Science program 3 of those subjects must be biology, physics and chemistry. For the Economics program, Humanities program and the Social Science program 4 of the 9 subjects you need to have passed are geography, history, social science and religion. For the Art´s program any 9 subjects are eligible.) For the vocational programs you need to have passed English, mathematics and Swedish as well as 5 more subjects, i.e. 8 subjects in total.

If the applicant is lacking a final grade in one or more of the mandatory subjects it is possible to contact “sofia Distans" (www.sofiadistans.nulänk till annan webbplats), an educational organisation that offer distance courses in subjects of the Swedish compulsory school (for Swedish citizens).

Applicants from the Nordic countries; Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland do not need a grade in Swedish to eligible for admission.

If you apply for the secondary International Baccalaureate program in Sweden contact the Upper Secondary Schools Admission Office or the school you are interested in applying to for specific information about their requirements for admission. The IB-schools in Stockholm County have different requirements for admission.  Students applying for the International Baccalaureate are usually summoned for a test. Get in contact with the school you wish to apply for in order to find out exactly what their test involves.

Note that the IB-education in most cases in Sweden includes three years of studies. The first year, the Pre- IB, is a preparatory year. During that year you prepare for the proper IB-education, which you study during the remaining two years

Final grades are to be sent to the Upper Secondary Schools Admission Office. If possible, also send the preliminary grades during the autumn term. Scandinavian, English, French, German and Spanish grades do not need to be translated. Grades from all other countries have to be translated. After receiving the applicant´s grades the Upper Secondary Schools Admission Office will communicate the grade documents to the respective decision-maker that make the decision regarding admission:
Decision-maker in each municipality (municipal upper secondary schools)
Responsible decision-maker at the independent upper secondary school

The upper Secondary Schools Admission Office does not make any decisions regarding admission within the independent quota. It is the decision-maker who makes the decision if the student will be accepted to the applied program. The decision about admission will be made on the basis of the final grades that the pupil receives from his/her school and a total judgment of his/her complete merits.

Applicants with foreign grades do not receive admission results in the preliminary admission. Decisions about admission within the independent quota are only made in the final admission in June/July.

This information is addressed to the applicants for educations within Stockholm County, Gnesta municipality and Håbo town district. When applying outside Stockholm County, contact respective admission secretariat.
